I wrote this song almost entirely on the drive up from LA to Sacramento, the day after lockdown had been declared, figuring it would be better to spend the foreseeable future of quarantine at my parents’ house with the rest of my family rather than alone in my apartment. It was very strange driving away from where I’ve lived for the past almost seven years, really having no idea when I’d be back. It was the right decision though, and I can’t imagine going through these past two months of uncertainty without my family surrounding me. Of course, this time has been all the more devastating for us with the loss of our beloved Auntie Kathi. This was the last new song of mine I sent her to hear, and it means a lot that it got her blessing. A couple of weeks after she passed, I needed to get back to finishing this track, but I needed some sort of closure for it that was more than just music, something that would tie it together for me emotionally. So for the first time on any recording of mine, I asked both of my parents and all three of my sisters if they would come up and sing on this song, which they all did. After losing someone so close to us so suddenly, having all of the rest of us together on this recording was one of the greatest gifts of healing I could ask for. The song explores the balance between uncertainty and certainty, endings and beginnings. I can’t wait for you to hear it!
